2016 is a special year! This year is a leap year, which means we will have 366 days instead of 365. This one extra day, known as leap day, only occurs once every four years. But why do we have a leap year? The need for a leap year was first realized by the early Egyptians; however, it was not until 46 B.C. when the leap year was officially adopted. The purpose of a leap day every four years is rooted in the need to balance our calendars with the astrological year. The astrological year is how long it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun. It takes the Earth 365.24 days to orbit the Sun, but our current calendar has 365 days. Over time, a leap year is needed to maintain a calendar that is consistent with the Earth’s orbit. So the leap day, February 29, was created!
